Cisgender Female vs Transgender Female
Woman is the right word for both; the difference is what was said in the delivery room and what one of you had to cross to get here.
The short version
A cis woman was called a girl at birth, and woman turned out to be the right word, often so quietly that she never had to check. A trans woman is a woman who was assigned male at birth. That is the whole definition and almost none of the experience. Same destination. Two roads, one of them at cost.
This page is not about who counts. Both pages are clear that woman is the right word for both of you, and that she is not a nearby version of the other. What the page is for is the one honest reader question: which of these two pages is mine? A lot of people land on the cis page to rule it out, and the cis page says that is possibly its best use.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Cisgender Female if…
- You have thought seriously about what being a woman costs you. You have never once thought about whether you are one.
- You hate the "Ladies" in a group email for the tone, the little pat on the head. Not the category.
- Someone gets your gender wrong and you correct them the way you would correct a misspelled surname. Mild. Forgotten by lunch.
More likely Transgender Female if…
- You were assigned male at birth and the thought keeps coming back for years and never wears out.
- The relief lives in small things: a shaved leg under jeans, a female character in a game, a name you typed into a form once and looked at for a while.
- When you picture ten years ahead and it goes well, there is no man in the picture.
- Rarely both, because the two words describe what was assigned at birth, and that was one thing or the other. The destination is shared: woman, fully, for both, and neither page treats the other as a lesser case.
- The rooms overlap more than the words suggest. The cis page says every law written to check who counts as a woman gets enforced by strangers eyeballing people in doorways, and the women stopped are often cis women with short hair, broad shoulders or the wrong face.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
What is the difference between a cis woman and a trans woman?
What was said in the delivery room, and what one of them had to cross afterwards. A cis woman was called a girl at birth and the word fit. A trans woman was assigned male and is a woman anyway, with or without hormones, surgery, or anyone knowing. Woman is the right word for both. One is not a version of the other.
Is "cis" an insult?
No. It is the pair to trans, a description rather than a badge or a slur, and it exists so that woman does not silently come to mean normal woman with everyone else needing an adjective. You are allowed to dislike the word for yourself and ask people not to use it about you. Disliking a label and it being a slur are different things.
