Genderfluid vs Demifluid
Genderfluid means everything can move, including the base; demifluid keeps one region permanently out of the water and lets the rest move around it.
The short version
Both describe movement. The question is range. For a genderfluid person the whole ground moves: a man some weeks, nothing others, something unnamed after that. For a demifluid person the floor stays put and the furniture gets rearranged.
An honest note. Demifluid is a young, small word from online communities, with contested edges, and people disagree about where it ends and demiflux begins. Genderfluid is the wider word people already recognise. If the shape fits and the word does not, keep the shape.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Genderfluid if…
- Some stretches the whole question sits across the room and nothing at all is there.
- Old photos: some read as a stranger, some as you, with no pattern you can name and no constant running through them.
- You could date what has changed. You could not name anything that has stayed.
More likely Demifluid if…
- You can plan a haircut a year out. You cannot predict what you will want to be called at a party in three weeks.
- You once tried genderfluid. It was roomy, but it implied the whole thing was up for grabs, and it is not.
- You have felt like a fraud around fluid people for having something fixed, and around static people for having something that moves.
- Every demifluid person could truthfully say genderfluid. It is the wider word, and many use it in public because nobody knows the smaller one.
- If the anchor is small and most of you swings, the two words describe the same life from different ends. Pick whichever you can say out loud without flinching.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
What is the difference between demifluid and genderfluid?
Range. Genderfluid means the movement is not fenced off; on a given day it could be anywhere. Demifluid means one part has never moved and never will, and the fluidity happens around it. The practical test is whether you can name something about your gender that has been identical since childhood while other parts have genuinely swapped. If yes, that anchor is the difference. If not, you are probably just genderfluid, and that is a word people already recognise.
Can I be demifluid if the fixed part is a woman or a man?
Some people say yes and use it exactly that way. Others read demi- as meaning a partial connection only, and would say an anchor of a full binary gender puts you somewhere else. There is no body that decides this. What matters more than the ruling is whether the description works: something permanent, something moving, at the same time, on purpose.
Read both in full
Genderfluid means the gender underneath changes over time, so man, woman, both, neither, or something with no name at all can each be accurate depending on the day.
DemifluidPart of your gender is bolted down and never moves. Another part keeps changing. Both of those are permanent.
