Genderflux vs Boyflux
Genderflux tells you the dial moves; boyflux tells you what is on it — a boy, if you never have to ask which gender is getting louder.
The short version
Genderflux describes a dial rather than a location. The gender usually stays the same and what moves is how much of it there is: strong some weeks, faint others, for many people down to nothing. It does not say which gender is on the dial, and some people never know.
Boyflux is what you say when you do know, and the answer is a boy. Entirely a boy some weeks, faintly one others — a radio playing in the next room — nothing at all now and then, and then it climbs back. The stops along the way have names if you want them: demiboy, libramasculine, paraboy, man. Girlflux is the same dial with a girl on it, enbyflux with a non-binary gender. Boyflux is not a different thing from genderflux. It is genderflux with one more fact attached.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Genderflux if…
- It is more likely genderflux if you can feel the volume move but could never name what is moving — it arrives, it goes, and it has never had a word.
- It is more likely genderflux if what climbs back is non-binary, or unnamed, or not a boy — the umbrella covers every anchor, including no named one.
- It is more likely genderflux if you would rather not spend the conversation explaining what the boy part means to people who only asked in passing.
More likely Boyflux if…
- It is more likely boyflux if boy is the only gender that ever turns up — it just does not always turn up.
- It is more likely boyflux if you were sure you were a trans man in March and not sure you were anything by June, and no other gender arrived in between.
- It is more likely boyflux if he/him lands like heat on a loud week and like nothing at all on a quiet one, same word, same person saying it.
- Boyflux sits inside genderflux, so both are true at once. Plenty of people give the umbrella to colleagues and the anchor to whoever is close enough to notice a quiet month.
- Which word fits can change as your understanding does. Starting under the umbrella and finding the anchor later is common; so is starting with boyflux and finding the anchor less fixed than it seemed.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
What is the difference between genderflux and boyflux?
Precision. Genderflux says the intensity of your gender rises and falls, without saying which gender. Boyflux says which: a boy's, or a man's, at anything from full strength to none, and always male when present. If you always know it is boy-ness getting louder and quieter, boyflux is the tighter word. If you do not, genderflux is the honest one.
Can I take testosterone if my gender changes strength?
People in this position do, under either word. The question most find useful is not what you want at full volume but what you would still be glad of at zero — aiming at the whole range rather than the best week. Some go low dose, some go slowly, some decide against. Take the decision on an ordinary day, not a peak or a crash, and know that a clinician treating fluctuation as doubt is a problem with the service rather than with you.
