Neutrois vs Agender
Agender is no gender; neutrois is a gender that is neutral — a blank against a zero, and neutrois more often arrives with a wish about the body.
The short version
These are the closest relatives on the site, and the most argued-over line. Agender is usually described as having no gender. Neutrois is usually described as having one that is neutral: not male, not female, not a mix, but a setting rather than an absence. Plenty of people use the two interchangeably and see no contradiction.
Where a working difference exists, it tends to be the body. Neutrois grew up around people who wanted sexed characteristics removed rather than swapped — a chest that is no chest, a voice that tells people nothing. Agender describes the inside only and makes no claim about the outside. Neither word requires any medical step, and nobody is going to hand you a ruling on where one ends and the other begins.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Neutrois if…
- It is more likely neutrois if you have a gender and it is neutral: present, held firmly, and still not male or female.
- It is more likely neutrois if the wish is subtractive — not a different chest but no chest, not another voice but one that gives nothing away.
- It is more likely neutrois if being called a man or a woman still lands wrong, and you would call that a fact about your gender rather than the absence of one.
More likely Agender if…
- It is more likely agender if the honest answer to "what's your gender" is nothing — not zero on a scale, just no reading.
- It is more likely agender if your objection is to being sorted at all, and it says nothing about what you want done to the outside. Wanting nothing done is ordinary here.
- It is more likely agender if you reached for a word about the inside only, and "neutral" sounds like it claims more than you feel.
- Many people use both words about themselves and think nothing of it. The community has never settled where neutrois ends and agender begins, and both usages are in genuine circulation.
- If neither definition sorts you cleanly, you are in the same position as most people who use these words. Pick the one that sounds like the inside of your head — and expect fewer people to know neutrois.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
What is the difference between neutrois and agender?
The line most people draw: agender is no gender, neutrois is a neutral gender. A blank versus a zero. In practice they blur, plenty of people use both, and the community has never settled it. The most useful working difference is that neutrois is more often tied up with wanting a neutral body, while agender often makes no claim about the body at all.
Is neutrois just an older word for agender?
It is older than people assume, and it is used less now than it once was — many who would have said neutrois then say non-binary or agender today. But it is not a synonym. Neutrois filled a gap: there was no other term for wanting sexed characteristics removed rather than exchanged. If that is the centre of it for you, the word still does a job agender does not. A word going quiet is not a word being wrong.
Read both in full
A neutral gender — not a man, not a woman, and not a mix of the two. For many people it comes with wanting a body that gives nothing away.
AgenderAgender is having no gender at all: not a blend of two, not a quieter version of one, just nothing where other people report something — though some describe that nothing as neutral rather than empty.
