Non-Binary vs Transfeminine
Non-binary says where you are, not man and not woman; transfeminine says which way you are facing, assigned male and running feminine.
The short version
Non-binary is a location word. It covers everyone whose gender isn't reached by man or woman, and it says nothing about direction of travel, assignment at birth, or what you want done about any of it. Plenty of non-binary people are one fixed thing that simply isn't either.
Transfeminine is a direction word. It describes people assigned male at birth whose gender runs feminine — towards womanhood, or towards femininity without womanhood, or towards something with no clean name yet. Trans women sit under it. So do demigirls and femme-leaning non-binary people. It is honest without being precise: it says which way you are facing without demanding you finish the sentence tonight. The two often describe the same person from different angles.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Non-Binary if…
- It is more likely non-binary if your gender isn't reached by man or woman, and it isn't leaning towards either.
- It is more likely non-binary if "not a man, not a woman" feels complete, with nothing about travel to add.
- It is more likely non-binary if you were assigned female and feel a femme-leaning shift — most people read transfeminine as the opposite direction, and femme non-binary will get you understood with less argument.
More likely Transfeminine if…
- It is more likely transfeminine if you were assigned male and the pull is towards the feminine, whether or not "woman" turns out to be the word.
- It is more likely transfeminine if "sir" makes something in your chest go flat, and "beautiful" lands in a completely different part of your body from "handsome".
- It is more likely transfeminine if you want a word that says which way you are facing without asking you to decide the endpoint yet.
- Femme-leaning non-binary people assigned male at birth are exactly the overlap: transfeminine says the direction, non-binary says the destination isn't "woman". Many use both, in different rooms.
- Demigirls assigned male sit under both umbrellas too. Whether a transfeminine person also counts as non-binary depends on whether woman is the endpoint — and you are allowed to leave that open.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
Can you be non-binary and transfeminine?
Yes, and a lot of people are. Transfeminine names the direction — assigned male, facing feminine. Non-binary names where you have landed — not a man, not a woman. If both are true of you, both words are yours, and the direction word can stay while the destination stays open.
Is transfeminine the same as non-binary?
No. Non-binary says nothing about which way you lean or what you were assigned. Transfeminine says both: assigned male, running feminine. A trans woman is transfeminine and may not be non-binary at all. A non-binary person with no feminine lean is not transfeminine. The overlap is the femme-leaning non-binary person assigned male, and there the two words describe one person from two angles.
Read both in full
Non-binary is the umbrella word for a gender that isn't man or woman: both, neither, partly, or something those two words don't reach.
TransfeminineYou are facing towards the feminine. Whether the word at the end of that is "woman" is a separate question, and you are allowed to leave it open.
