Transmasculine vs Tomboy
Tomboy keeps the girl and changes the wardrobe; transmasculine is where the girl herself stopped fitting.
The short version
A tomboy is a girl or woman who does boyish: the clothes, the games, the way of carrying herself. She is still a girl, usually with no question about it. Most tomboys grow up to be women who kept the trainers, and the word says nothing about who they will become. It is presentation, not gender.
Transmasculine is a direction. You were almost certainly raised as a girl, and where you are heading is masculine — a flat chest, a low voice, "mate" from a stranger — whether or not you ever land on "man". Plenty of transmasculine people had tomboy as their first word, and it fitted for years. Then one day it stopped, and they could not say why. That stopping is the whole difference.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Transmasculine if…
- It is more likely transmasculine if you daydream about the chest, the shoulders, the jaw — not about being a girl who is left alone in trousers.
- It is more likely transmasculine if you had tomboy for years, it fitted, and then it stopped fitting without any change in your wardrobe.
- It is more likely transmasculine if "ladies" lands like a slap and "mate" lands like a hand on your back, and you cannot explain the difference to anyone who has not felt it.
More likely Tomboy if…
- It is more likely tomboy if you are a girl, that has never been in doubt, and the clothes are the only part other people cannot process.
- It is more likely tomboy if you buy from the men's section because the pockets are real, and that is genuinely the whole feeling — no charge, no relief.
- It is more likely tomboy if the fight you recognise is with how girls are told to sit, dress and play, and a world without those rules would leave you entirely a woman.
- Tomboy is often where transmasculine people start, and some keep the word for the child they were even after finding the adult one. Having been a tomboy is not evidence either way.
- You can be a tomboy today with the whole gender question still open. The word does not close it, and you do not owe anyone a verdict on which page you belong to.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
What is the difference between transmasculine and tomboy?
A tomboy is a girl or woman with boyish presentation and interests: it describes how she looks and plays, and she is still a girl. Transmasculine describes a direction — raised as a girl, heading masculine, wanting the body read differently — whether or not the destination is "man". Same wardrobe, sometimes. Different claim about the person inside it.
Was I a tomboy or was I transmasculine all along?
You cannot always tell from the childhood. Plenty of transmasculine people were tomboys first and plenty of tomboys were only ever tomboys. The useful question is not what you were at nine but what you want now: if a world that treated masculine women as well as men would settle you, tomboy still fits. If you would still want the chest, the voice and the "mate" from a stranger, that is transmasculine. Taking your time here costs nothing.
