Masc

Masculine in how you present — clothes, hair, carriage — whatever your gender is. A description of the outside, not a verdict on the inside.

A way of presenting, not a gender identity. Masc is a way of presenting — clothes, hair, carriage — not a gender identity; people of any gender present masc.

A shorter entry: the essentials, written to the same standard. The fuller guides are on the main identities.

What it is

Masc is short for masculine, and it is mostly a word about the outside. Short hair, flat shoes, the men's section, a way of standing. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki's entry says masculine can describe your gender, your presentation, or both — and then draws the line this page rests on: not everyone with a masculine gender presents masc, and not everyone who presents masc has a masculine gender.

It travels. Masc lesbians, masc non-binary people, masc trans men, masc-of-centre, and masc4masc in the gay dating apps, where the word does a different and more argued-over job. What counts as masculine shifts by culture and decade; the wiki lists the Western defaults — strength, stoicism, short hair, trousers, he/him — and notes the pressure on people assigned male at birth to conform to them.

What it is not: a gender identity. You do not come out as masc; you present masc. It is not butch either, which is a masculinity with a specific queer lineage attached — the bars, the raids, the aunt in the tie. Masc is newer, broader and lighter. Some people prefer it for exactly that reason. Some find it thin.

Pronouns

None implied. Masc women use she; masc non-binary people use they, he, both or neither; masc men use he. Reading pronouns off a haircut is the mistake this page exists to stop.

Does this sound like you?

You buy in the men's section and it is not a statement. It is just where your clothes are.
You have been called sir and felt nothing much, then been called sir with an apology attached and felt that.
Handsome does more for you than pretty. So does "looking sharp".
Your barber knows you, and may be the only stranger who has never got your gender wrong, because he never asked.
You have had the conversation — "are you trans, then?" — because your jacket confused someone, and your answer was no, or not yet, or it's just a jacket.
On a dating profile the word does in one syllable what would otherwise take a paragraph.
You have been read as butch and quietly declined the history that came with it. Or accepted it. Either way, you noticed.
Masc feels like an accurate adjective, and you would look at someone sideways if they called it your gender.

Nearby identities

The distinction is the useful part.

It might not be you if…

  • You want a word for what you are, not how you look. Masc will not carry that. Look at the identities it sits beside — butch, transmasculine, demiboy — and see which one answers the question.
  • The masculinity is about who you want rather than how you present. That is a fact about attraction, and masc4masc culture has arguments of its own you may not want.
  • Being read as masculine feels like a mistake every time. That is not a masc person; that is someone being gendered wrong.
  • You are a man who dresses like a man. Accurate, and the word adds nothing.

Questions people ask

Is masc a gender?

Not on its own. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki allows masculine to describe a gender as well as a presentation, but in everyday use masc is an adjective: masc lesbian, masc enby, masc-presenting. If the thing you want a word for is your gender, the neighbours on this page are where to look.

What's the difference between masc and butch?

Butch grew up in lesbian and dyke communities and still carries that lineage — the look, the history, the way it organises desire. Masc is the same outside with the history unstuck. Many people are both. Some choose masc precisely to avoid the butch argument; some think that misses the point.

Can a woman be masc without being a lesbian?

Yes. Masc says nothing about who you want. Plenty of straight women present masc. Whether strangers assume otherwise is a separate, tedious question.
