Demifluid vs Demiflux
Same shape, different movement: both have one fixed part, but demifluid's moving part changes which gender it is and demiflux's changes how much.
The short version
Both words describe two facts held together. Something in your gender is fixed and has never seriously been in doubt. Something next to it moves. The difference is the kind of movement. Switching stations is fluid. Turning the dial is flux.
This is the most argued-over line in the whole area, so treat any confident answer with suspicion, including this one. Both words are young and small, with no agreed definition, and some people use them interchangeably and will tell you so. Read for the shape, not the vocabulary. If the shape fits and the word does not, keep the shape.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Demifluid if…
- You have given two different answers on two different forms, months apart, and neither one was a lie.
- One item of clothing is non-negotiable; everything else in the wardrobe rotates and you barely notice it happening.
- You tried calling yourself genderfluid — roomy, but it implied the whole thing was up for grabs, and it is not.
More likely Demiflux if…
- You read the demiboy or demigirl page and thought: yes, but not always this much.
- There is a floor and a ceiling: something is always left on the emptiest day, and even at full strength you are partly it, never wholly.
- The same word — sir, love, mate, your own name — lands right on Tuesday and wrong on Thursday, and it is the same word both days.
- Some people use both words for the same experience, and say so. If both fit, pick whichever you can say out loud without flinching.
- Possible in principle: a fixed part, and a moving part that changes both what it is and how loud it is. At that point genderfluid or genderflux may be shorter words people already recognise.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
What is the difference between demifluid and demiflux?
Both have one part that stays put and one part that moves. In demifluid the moving part changes which gender it is — non-binary this week, something else next. In demiflux it changes how much: same gender, different volume. Some people use both words for the same experience, and there is no body that decides.
How do I tell whether my gender is changing or it is just my mood?
Write it down for a month. Two numbers a day: where the gender sat, and how the day went. If they rise and fall together every single time, mood is doing the work. If you get strong gender in an awful week and flatness in a lovely one, it is running on its own clock. This costs nothing and settles more than any page can.

Part of your gender is bolted down and never moves. Another part keeps changing. Both of those are permanent.
DemifluxPart of your gender holds still, and it was never a whole gender to begin with. Another part rises and falls in strength — loud some weeks, barely there in others.
