Futch vs Butch
Butch is the pole and futch is the place between it and femme, from the same sapphic culture.
The short version
Butch is a masculinity grown inside queer life. It did not come from men and it is not an imitation of them: bar culture, factory floors, softball teams, the aunt who wore a tie to every wedding. It is not just clothes. Butch is what happens when the masculinity is load-bearing — how you move, how you want to be looked at, who you are to the person you love. Some butches say it is a gender in its own right.
Futch is a presentation word from the same culture, made by pushing femme and butch together. It describes a sapphic woman, or a feminine-aligned non-binary person, whose look mixes the two: a settled androgyny that does not lean far either way, or a swing, more butch some weeks and more femme others, without the person underneath changing. It is not a gender. Butches read a futch as a bit femme; femmes read her as a bit butch. Both are right and neither is the whole answer.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Futch if…
- It is more likely futch if half your wardrobe is from the men's section and half is not, and the halves get worn together.
- It is more likely futch if you could not find your square on the meme, and being read as slightly the other thing by both poles feels accurate rather than like a failure.
- It is more likely futch if what moves is your look and not your gender, and neither pole has ever felt like a home you were being kept out of.
More likely Butch if…
- It is more likely butch if handsome does something to you that pretty never did, and a femme clocking you across a room is a moment you can feel the exact second of.
- It is more likely butch if being called a woman is not wrong exactly, just not the whole sentence — and butch is the rest of it.
- It is more likely butch if softening your look for a room feels like arithmetic rather than a choice of outfit, because the masculinity is not something you put on.
- Soft butch and futch overlap almost completely, and soft butch is still butch. Some people say "I am a butch, gently"; some say "I am neither pole". Both are in daily use, inside the same bars and group chats, and nobody is issuing rulings.
- You can be futch this year and butch in five, or the other way round. Presentation words are allowed to move with you. Neither one comes with a contract.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
What is the difference between futch and butch?
Butch is a masculinity built inside queer life, and for many butches it is load-bearing or even a gender in its own right. Futch is a presentation between butch and femme, or one that swings across both, inside the same lesbian and sapphic culture. If the masculinity is how you move and how you want to be seen, butch is likely the truer word. If you are neither pole, or both by turns, futch.
Is futch the same as soft butch?
Nearly. The overlap is close to total. The difference is in the claim: soft butch says "I am a butch, gently" — still on the butch side of the line. Futch says "I am neither pole", or "both, depending on the week". Pick the one that matches how you would answer the question, and expect fewer people to know futch.
