Soft butch vs Futch
Both are presentation words, not genders: soft butch is butch turned down a notch or mixed with softer traits, while futch names a settled or shifting mix of
The short version
Soft butch is butch without the toughness, or butch with feminine details mixed in — the masculine presentation still does the work, the shirts, the stance, being clocked across a room, but it comes gentler, or softer-natured. It's filed as its own recognised variant of butch, not a lesser or more feminine version of it.
Futch sits in similar territory but describes the mix itself rather than a softened butch: a look that combines femme and butch directly, either as a settled androgyny that doesn't lean far either way, or as a swing between more butch and more femme at different times, with the person underneath unchanged. It applies more broadly than soft butch too — Wikipedia notes it can describe feminine-aligned nonbinary people as well as women, not only butches.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Soft butch if…
- Butch is clearly your base, and you want a word for the gentler, less tough version of it, without implying you're less butch.
- You want to stay anchored in butch community and language, with one qualifier attached.
- Your presentation is fairly consistent day to day, just not the toughest end of butch.
More likely Futch if…
- You mix butch and femme elements together, or swing between them, and neither butch nor femme alone captures it.
- You're not necessarily starting from a butch base — you might be closer to the middle, or feminine-aligned and nonbinary, and want a word that reflects a genuine blend.
- You want a word that allows for change day to day or week to week, rather than one settled point on the spectrum.
- Both are presentation and community words rooted in lesbian and sapphic culture, not gender identities in themselves.
- Neither implies less authenticity than harder butch or fuller femme — both pages are clear that a mixed or softened presentation is just as real as either end.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
Is futch the same as chapstick lesbian?
Chapstick lesbian is an older synonym for the same general territory futch covers, built on the older term lipstick lesbian. Stem, from stud-femme, is the Black-specific version of this same mixed presentation.
Can a soft butch also be futch?
Yes — the terms aren't mutually exclusive. Someone might describe themselves as soft butch when butch is clearly their base, and as futch if they feel the mix with femme is closer to even.
