Polygender vs Pangender
Polygender is a specific several, countable and often named; pangender is all the genders within reach of your own life.
The short version
Same arithmetic, different range. Polygender says more than one, with edges between them, each recognisably itself. Pangender says the set is wide, or complete within the limits of your own life and culture. Pangender is usually treated as the widest case sitting inside polygender.
Neither is settled doctrine. Polygender people argue over whether it means strictly more than two and whether multigender is the same word. Pangender people argue over the "pan" and whether maxigender says it better. Read both for the shape, not for a ruling.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Polygender if…
- You started a list and heard yourself apologising for the length of it.
- Two of your genders wanted different clothes this morning and you compromised into an outfit that suited neither.
- "Both" is too small and you notice every time you reach for it. "All" would be too big.
More likely Pangender if…
- Narrower labels each fit for a fortnight, then you noticed the parts they were not holding.
- "All genders" makes you feel described and slightly embarrassed, because it sounds enormous and you are just a person.
- You keep a private list of genders that are not yours to claim, and you stick to it.
- Pangender is usually treated as sitting inside polygender, so a pangender person can say polygender truthfully. The reverse is not automatic: three named genders is not a claim to a wide range.
- If your set is large, uncounted and still bounded by your own culture, both words are honest. Many people hand strangers "non-binary" instead of either and save the arithmetic for people who ask.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
What is the difference between polygender, multigender and pangender?
Polygender is more than one gender, usually understood as more than two, and it does not commit to a number. Multigender is the broad term for having more than one gender; many people use it and polygender to mean precisely the same thing, and that is genuinely unsettled. Pangender is the wide end: all the genders available to you, explicitly excluding ones closed to outsiders. Most people treat pangender as sitting inside the polygender and multigender umbrellas.
Can I be polygender and pangender at the same time?
Yes, in one direction. Pangender is a kind of polygender, so a pangender person can use the wider word without loss. If your set is countable and stable, polygender fits closer and gets you fewer arguments. If the honest answer is "all of them within reach", pangender is the more precise word, and you can still say polygender when the room cannot take the bigger one.

PangenderYour gender isn't one thing, and it isn't nothing — it's several at once, and the plural is the whole point.
