Side by side

Demiboy vs Transgender Male

A trans man is the whole thing, even on the days he doubts it; a demiboy is partly a man, with something else running alongside permanently.

The short version

Both words can share a binder, a low-dose prescription and he/him. The difference is what happens to the word "man" when everything else goes right.

The Demiboy page is careful about this: demi is not a modesty word for people who have not started yet, and it is not a waiting room. The Trans Man page is careful in the other direction: if the word keeps almost fitting and then sliding off, take that seriously rather than forcing yourself into the nearest available word.

How to tell them apart

Imagine the transition you would want, the name, the people, all of it sorted. Now say "I am a man" out loud. If it lands cleanly, trans man, and the hesitation was probably fear rather than fraction. If it still leaves a gap, some part of you standing slightly to one side of it, that gap is what demiboy names.
A stranger calls you sir. If your whole day quietly improves, trans man. If you feel about seventy per cent addressed, demiboy.
Look at the doubt. A trans man's doubt is doubt: a bad night, not fluidity and not fraction. A demiboy's "not entirely" is the same at 4pm on a good Tuesday as it is at 2am.

Which one is more likely

More likely Demiboy if…

  • You picked up non-binary and put it back down, because it did not account for the part of you that genuinely is a bit of a bloke.
  • You wrote male on a form, meant it, and still felt like you had rounded up.
  • You feel no urge to correct strangers, and a sharp urge to correct the three people who actually know you.

More likely Transgender Male if…

  • When you picture yourself at forty, the person is a man, and it does not feel like a fantasy. It feels like the version of the file that is not corrupted.
  • You have imagined a life as a woman where everything goes right, and the picture is perfectly nice and still is not you.
  • The word brings relief or steadiness, even when the practicalities terrify you.
When both words fit
  • Some people use demiboy on the way in, then find man fits completely once their life catches up. Using trans man for now and changing later, or the other way round, is ordinary and nobody is keeping the receipt.
  • A demiboy assigned female can accurately call himself transmasculine, alongside trans men. That is a shared direction, not a shared word. Demiboy and trans man themselves rarely both fit at the same moment.

What people get wrong

“Demiboy is a stepping stone. You will end up a man eventually.”
Some people do move on from it. Plenty do not, and nobody has counted either way. A word that describes where you are now does not owe anyone a destination, and nobody asks cis men when they plan to finish.
“A trans man who is soft, camp, or wants only part of the medical menu is really a demiboy.”
Masculinity is a style. Being a man is not. There are femme trans men who cry easily, want top surgery and no hormones, and have never held a drill. Wanting less is not being less of a man.

Questions people ask

Am I a demiboy or a trans man?

Ask what happens to the word man when everything else goes right. Picture the transition you would want and the people using your name, then say "I am a man" out loud. If it lands cleanly, trans man is the likelier fit and the hesitation is fear rather than fraction. If it still leaves a gap, that gap is what demiboy names. You are allowed to use either for now and change later. Plenty of people do it in both orders.

Can a demiboy take testosterone or have top surgery?

Yes, where it is available and if you want it. Nothing about being partial requires wanting a partial body, and nothing stops you wanting one. Some demiboys take a full dose, some a low dose on purpose, some want top surgery and nothing else, some want none of it. The friction usually comes from being asked to justify wanting less than the standard package. Decide what you want before the appointment and write it down in plain words.
