Demigender vs Non-Binary
Non-binary tells people where you are not; demigender tells them where you partly are, a named share of one gender held steadily, with the rest unclaimed.
The short version
Umbrella and specific. Non-binary covers everyone whose gender is not man or woman: both, neither, partly, something unnamed. Demigender picks out one shape under it: partly one gender, and the remainder is not a second gender. It is blank.
Most people who use one use both, choosing whichever the room can handle. The question here is whether the precision buys you anything, or whether "not a man, not a woman" already says everything true about you.
How to tell them apart
Which one is more likely
More likely Demigender if…
- "Woman" or "man" is a word you would defend if someone tried to take it off you, and one you would never offer as the complete story.
- You corrected someone's "she" and then felt like a fraud, because she was not wrong. Just not finished.
- You tried agender on in your head once. Too empty. Nothing is the wrong amount.
More likely Non-Binary if…
- You tried being fully a man and fully a woman in your head and found both wrong in a different direction, not partly right.
- You have no picture of how you want to look, and a very clear list of how you do not.
- You want a word the dentist already knows, with no clause after it.
- Demigender sits under non-binary, so both are honestly available to almost everyone who uses the narrower word. Non-binary in public, demigirl or demiboy in private, is the standard arrangement.
- Whether demigender counts as non-binary, or as trans, is contested by demigender people themselves. Some think of themselves as women or men with a caveat and claim neither umbrella. Both positions are current.

What people get wrong
Questions people ask
Is demigirl the same as non-binary?
It sits under non-binary rather than beside it. Non-binary tells people where you are not; demigirl tells them where you partly are. Most people who use one use both, picking whichever the room can handle. If you want a word that needs no explanation at a work party, non-binary is the one. If you want the accurate one, it is the other.
Do I need dysphoria to be demigender or non-binary?
No, for either. Dysphoria is common and it is not the entrance exam. Where it turns up it often hides as something duller than distress: never appearing in photos, hating your recorded voice, going flat when someone puts a title in front of your name. For demigender people it tends to be specific rather than total, a chest in a fitted shirt or one relative's kitchen. Euphoria counts as evidence too: the haircut, the name badge with no title on it, the stranger who hesitated before choosing a word.

A partial connection to a gender — enough to be real, not enough to be the whole answer.
Non-BinaryNon-binary is the umbrella word for a gender that isn't man or woman: both, neither, partly, or something those two words don't reach.
