Genderqueer vs Agender

Agender is no gender at all — an absence where the question goes — while genderqueer is more often a surplus that will not sit still than a blank.

The short version

Ask an agender person what gender they feel like and nothing arrives. Not half of each, not parked in the middle, not a man or a woman with the volume turned down. The field is blank, and for a lot of people the blank is not a wound. It is just how it is.

Ask a genderqueer person and you usually get too much answer rather than none. Beard and a dress. She/her and butch as hell. A body edited in two directions at once. The gender does not resolve into man or woman, and the refusal to resolve is part of the point. Both sit under the non-binary umbrella and both get filed as “neither”, and from the inside they feel almost opposite: one is nothing where the question goes, the other is a surplus that will not behave.

How to tell them apart

Read a description of what it feels like to be a woman, or a man. If it is about as relevant to you as a description of what it feels like to be Dutch, that is agender. If it is relevant, contradictory, and none of it lands cleanly, that is genderqueer.
Take a compliment. “You look beautiful”, “you look handsome”. Agender people tend to bin the gendered half quietly. Genderqueer people often want the wrong half on purpose — the mismatch is the message.
Ask what neutral does for you. Agender is often described as neutral, or as off the road entirely. Genderqueer rarely wants neutral: contradiction, yes; blank, no.

Which one is more likely

More likely Genderqueer if…

  • You have a lot of gender, and it just will not behave.
  • You kept a gendered word for yourself on purpose because the wrongness of it is doing work.
  • You find androgyny boring rather than aspirational — the middle was never where you were heading.

More likely Agender if…

  • The honest reply to “what is your gender” is a blank, not a different shape.
  • You answer to sir and to ma'am without much reaction either way, then feel your shoulders drop in the rare hour when nobody calls you either.
  • You assumed for most of your life that everyone was performing gender and nobody actually felt it, and were genuinely surprised to learn they do.
When both words fit
  • Rarely both at once. One word describes an absence and the other a surplus, and most people find one of those true and the other not.
  • You are agender and you use genderqueer for the edge it carries — the queer history, the refusal to be filed. That is a choice about which flag to fly, not a contradiction.

What people get wrong

“Genderqueer and agender both just mean “neither”.”
On a form, maybe. From the inside they are different things: agender is no gender where other people report one; genderqueer is a gender that will not resolve, and it usually has more going on, not less.
“Agender people do not care about gender, so any word will do.”
Absence is not indifference. Plenty of agender people care enormously about how they get read and are worn down by getting it wrong all day. Not having a gender is a separate thing from not minding.

Questions people ask

Is agender a type of genderqueer?

Both are usually filed under non-binary, and some people use genderqueer as a wide word that could cover agender. But the two pages describe near-opposites: agender is nothing where the question goes; genderqueer is usually too much gender, not none. If the feeling is absence rather than surplus, agender will describe it far better.

How do I know if I am agender or genderqueer?

Ask whether anything is there once the rules are taken away. If the answer is nothing — not faint, not neutral by choice, just no answer — read agender. If something is there, and it is contradictory, political, or refuses every box on offer, read genderqueer. If you are not sure, notice which page makes your stomach drop.
